DD1 stumbled across this book at the library when she was researching for an assignment for her CHYS paper. Very interesting, informative book. Well worth the read!!

DH bought this book for me many years ago. I did read it but I have not picked it up in years. Cleaning out the bookshelf I came across it again. Time to re-read it.

So what actually happened?

This is taken from the White Death website
"Natural Disaster Strikes
On Friday, January 28, 1977 a natural disaster struck Canada and the United States. Southern portions of the province of Ontario and parts of western and northern New York State were besieged by the blizzard of the century and millennium. During this winter hurricane, the temperature plunged to near zero Fahrenheit as hurricane force winds roared across the frozen surface of Lake Erie. Temperature and wind combined to create a wind chill of 60 below zero. Visibility was also zero and remained there from 11:30 a.m on the 28th until 12:50 a.m on the 29th of January. The storm did not subside until February. Wind gusts over 50 miles per hour occurred each day with official peaks ranging between 69 and 73 miles per hour.

Ten Thousand Square Miles of Ice
Lake Erie has a surface area of ten thousand square miles. This water surface had frozen by December 14th, 1976 an early freezing record. Here formed a desert of ice that was flatter than any prairie or desert of sand. As hurricane force winds swept across the frozen lake, no natural barriers broke the force of the sweep so that the northeast shore areas felt the full blast of this natural disaster.

The deep snow that had built up on the surface of the lake had not melted during the cold month of January so that ten thousand square miles of snow powder blew inland from the frozen surface of Lake Erie and buried people in their cars and homes.

By the night of Friday, January 28, 1977, thousands of people were stranded in office buildings, schools, police stations, fire halls, bars, factories, cars, houses and in the homes of strangers. Most highways were impassable, train lines were blocked and airports were closed. Snow paralysis had set in during this unique winter hurricane." I have lived in the Niagara Region since 1987 & have seen some snow but even with all the photos displayed in the book and in the White Death photo gallery on their website I still cannot imagine that amount of snow.

Very good book. Well worth the read and re-read!! & as the last sentence in the books says "Beware of Snowflakes!"

Dead Lucky Life After Death on Mount Everest -- Book Review

I went to the public library this past week to get the book "Dead Lucky Life After Death on Mount Everest" by Lincoln Hall. I had heard a review of this book and was very interested in reading it for myself. I have read the book "Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster" by Jon Krakauer a few years ago about the 1996 disaster on Mt Everest where that year became known for the most fatalities, including experienced mountaineer guides. Everest in NOT forgiving especially at that altitude! Hall is every experienced Australian mountaineer who collapsed from High Altitude Cerebral Edema at 28,000 ft after a successful summit and was left for dead. After collapsing he had not moved for quite some time. Miraculously he survived the night without any shelter or backpack. Dead men do not need tents or backpacks!! One of the last expeditions up the mountain that year came across him the next day. At that time he was very lucid after hallucinating most of the night. These climbers along with their Sherpa s gave up their push for the summit to rescue Hall.

Definitely a worthwhile read.

Snow Day

Yesterday was a Snow Day for all students in the Niagara area. We were suppose to get Snowmageddon but it did not materialize. We did get a fair amount of snow but not the amount predicted. Not sure whether I would have liked 45 cm of snow, 15-20 cm was enough to shovel.

DD1 has a birthday party to go to on Saturday night. She decided because this was a snow day she would make something. She dug out this book.

The Birthday girl (EC) loves ponies so this is the pattern DD1 decided to make.

The pony turned out really cute but was rather fiddly to make. This was definitely a joint effect.

Now it is back to make pj pants and other sewing!

EC absolutely *LOVED* the pony. She actually squeed in the restaurant!!

Sewing Time!!

DD2 needs clothes so we went to Fabricland & picked up some patterns & material. Fabricland had a wonderful sale. We love sales.

I haven't sewn clothing that needs to fit correctly for many years. I decided it was a good idea to sew easy clothing before progressing onto skirts & jackets. Both girls needed pj pants, these are definitely easy to make.

Sushi Lessons

DD2 went to a sushi lesson on Friday, January 21, 2011 from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm. These are what she made and bought home. They were definitely yummy!!

Snickernickerbox

I am done, done, done with my Christmas sewing!! DD#1 loves the book "Mabel Murple" & DD#2 loves the colour purple. Actually it is her favourite colour. DD#2 had a purple leather skirt that she wore & wore until she could not wear it anymore. Obviously she would not let me do anything with it, so it was left in the fabric drawer.

DD#1 decided that DD#2 needed a purple bear named 'Snickernickerbox' for Christmas just like the bear in the book Mabel Murple. DD#1 did not have time to sew the bear so guess who was voluntold to do the sewing.

FELTING!!!!

These are the Ballerina Slippers that have taken absolutely ages to felt as it would take ALL afternoon to get them to shrink. NO more!!! I can now do it in one maybe 2 cycles. The secret is 'DAWN' dish detergent. I have absolutely no idea why it works but it does . . . well it does for me anyway!!!

DD#2 is absolutely thrilled with her slippers!!

(These slippers won First Place Ribbons in 2 fairs)

I am back!! I started the New Year with a bang as far as knitting went. I finished the Knot Bag in a couple of days.

I cast on the Albem Purse for DD#2 as well as Coraline Mittens for DD#1. Great start. so what happened. February came and with it the 2010 Ravelympics. I signed up for WIP's Wrestling. I had the Coraline Mittens to finish. I knew I did not have a lot of time to knit so decided that if I could get a small project finished for the Olympics I would be extremely happy. Half way through the Olympics I knew I was not going to meet that goal of finishing the mittens. Time to reassess the goal. I would be happy if I could get one mitten finished. Goal completed by the end of the Olympics. I am very pleased!

Then as it happens so often, Life Happens!! March, April, May came and went without knitting. I may have picked up the needles and knitted a couple of stitches but nothing to speak of. June was just about the same but life has calmed down quite a bit, much to my liking!! I picked up the needles again & finished the Albem Purse. DD#2 is extremely pleased with it!! DD#1 has now decided that she does not like/want the Coraline Mittens. What to do with one mitten?? She wants Bella's Mittens. I cast on Bella's Mittens in yarn that she bought from The Fibre Garden. The yarn is a lighter weight than the Cascade 109 that the pattern calls for. I have had to do a little juggling with the pattern as DD#1 has small hands. The yarn has been dyed with Yellow Onion Skins by DyeGuy. Bella's Mittens were cast on at the end of June & I finished the first mitten at the beginning of July. Great end to June & fantastic start to July.

Let's keep this momentum going!!

"Danger Will Robinson Danger"

A Friendship Afghan project

I participated in a Friendship Afghan project on Ravelry. I thought it was the neatest idea. My daughter Canadiangirl turns 21. In New Zealand the 21st birthday is a big deal - or at least when I was growing up. I wanted to do something special for Canadiangirl. I was inspired to make a afghan made up of squares donated by friends on Ravelry. I wanted to keep this project a secret from Canadiangirl. I had the squares sent to a friend's address so she did not see them.

My friend SE dropped off the squares at our house one afternoon when Canadiangirl was home. I had to let DD#2 know what was going on so she could intercept SE & get the squares to my bedroom so Canadiangirl did not see them. DD#2 ran down the hall yelling "Danger Will Robinson" It must have looked absolutely hilarious!!

Knitting items for Canadiangirl is difficult as she knits as well & tends to want to know what I am knitting. I have devised a plan so that I can knit something without her knowing. I bought a Red file folder to denote DANGER & told her that this folder I was using for knitting patterns that I thought she would like & ones on her ravelry queue, if she would like to spoil the surprise go ahead and peek.

She looked at the file folder & with arms flailing & a cheeky grin on her face she says "Danger Will Robinson Danger" from the cheesy TV program "Lost in Space" We both ended up howling with laughter. I then took a Sharpie and printed on the outside of the folder "Danger Will Robinson Danger"

It has been quite amusing trying to keep this a secret but I have managed as when she opened up the Friendship Afghan this afternoon she had no idea & was absolutely thrilled with it. I also printed out the profile page of all the contributors & took a photo of the squares that they sent me. The completed afghan looks absolutely wonderful.

No I have not dropped off the face of the earth!

It has been insanely busy since Feb 2, 2009 when our life was turned upside down. Life should be back to normal at the beginning of April. Will try to post at least twice a month.

On the Knitting front: I have been knitting dishcloths, mindless but at least I am knitting. I have not had the concentration to knit anything else. Everything that was on the needles at the beginning of February is still on the needles. Must get back and finish them.

I made BW a Bonta Kun bag a few years ago. The bag has been well loved. Canadiangirl was at BW's for her birthday. She came home & said "Mum, the Bonta Kun bag is getting rather tattered as it has been well loved. Can you make another bag for her for her birthday next November" I said "What other anime does BW like as I think it would be good to make a different bag this time." Well she loves Trigun's black cat named "Kuroneko"

Edited: Canadiangirl's choice is the full cat & she wants me to put him on a backpack. I have seen a monkey backpack in one of the Stitch n Bitch books. Now to find the pattern!

This project has entered the frog pond. It was not working out how I wanted & it did not look right. BW will be getting something else for her birthday - a Kittyville Hat from Debbie Stoller's Stitch n Bitch book.

It started out with the Bonakun Bag for BW. Canadiangirl then decided CL needed a Maple Leaf pillow for his 18th birthday, a Coke Bottle pillow for his 19th birthday. Now it is a Hylian pillow of the Zelda, Nintendo fame!! for his 20th birthday. Does this look like it will ever stop!!

Creativ Festival

Canadiangirl and myself went to the Creativ Festival in Toronto on Saturday, October 18. We piled into the car with 3 others. Had a wonderful time. Canadiangirl and myself had never been before so it was a new experience for us. I must admit that I was a bit disappointed as it was advertised as a "Knitting Explosion" There was not too many knitting vendors so what has it been like other years!!

Our Haul:

Canadiangirl found these Elizabeth Zimmermann books at the Gemini Fibre booth. She could not resist. What can I say, I can use them too!! (I had ordered "The Knitting Workshop" & "Knitting Without Tears" from Knitpicks)

Also got these magazines all for $15.50. They were damaged. I cannot see any damage & the price was $2.50 - $3.00 per magazine.

I have been crocheting a baby blanket & as I hold the crochet hook "like a pitchfork" (so I have been told by an instructor) I find that my hand gets cramps. Not anymore. This ergonomic crochet is wonderful & the egg warms in your hand. Love it!!

Ravelympics & Lincoln County Fair

I signed up for the Ravelympics and was in the WIP Wrestling for Team New Zealand. I finished both the Yuletide Gnome and the Round Baby Blanket & then exhibited them in the Lincoln County Fair. The Yuletide Gnome won a 1st ribbon & the blanket won a 2nd ribbon. I am thrilled!

What Have I Been Doing?

Since I have not posted since June you will probably wonder what I have been doing. Well the summer was rather busy. I did get some knitting time in and there are a few projects that I started and finished.

Projects I cast on and finished:

The orange & purple dalek is a gift for ShinyBoots (DD#2). I made the grey& black dalek for Canadiangirl last Christmas but did not think that Shinyboots would want one too!!

The handwarmers were for Canadiangirl's friend AP. She absolutely loved them as lime green and hot pink are here favourite colours.

Wasp Problem

We have had a wasp problem in our backyard for a few years. One year it was so bad that we could not eat outside because there would be about 20 wasps hanging around. As soon as the bbq was fired up the wasps came a swarming. We could not find the nest in our yard so thought it must be in our neighbours yard. The neighbours live inside all summer with the air conditioning on, so the wasps were not a problem for them.

We found a solution.
We bought one of these.

Below is what it looks like in our tree.

I think it looks great! Problem is we did not read the instructions very carefully.

Step 5 says:

Enjoy a wasp free area. Remember not to leave the simulated wasp nest in the rain or it will spoil. (It has been thoroughly wet a few times with the thunderstorms we have been having)

I decided that I would like to knit one but could not find a pattern. I did find a crocheted one called Wasp Be Gone Nest I did learn to crochet when I was a child but not very well. I really preferred knitting. I was also taught the British terminology. I had to find a book of crochet stitches so that I could figure out what the differences where in regards to the terminology. I think I did pretty well. I have finished the wasps nest & have already stuffed it with plastic bags.

I made a Marialis End-to-End Scarf in Patons Lacette, colourway Lilac Lace. This pattern is from the 101 Designer One Skein Wonders book by Myra A I Stahman. I really enjoyed making this scarf that I tried to make another one in exactly the same yarn but for some reason I could not get the pattern to work, maybe it was SSS - no not second sock syndrome but Second Scarf Syndrome.

My next scarf I cast on after I frogged the second Marialis End-to-End Scarf was Branching Out from Knitty.com. I said that I would NEVER knit Branching Out. Well you should never say never! I actually enjoyed knitting this pattern. I said that I would never knit this because I think everyone in the whole world has knit this pattern. It turned out really well.

What I Have Been Up To!!

So what have I been up to lately!! I went to Rose's Fine Yarns of Niagara for WWKIP Day, June 14, 2008. The weather co-operated nicely, thank you. Met lots of new knitters & crocheters in the area, as well as old friends. We had a wonderful time in the sitting area.

We all received goodie bags when we registered in the morning. In my goodie bag there was Pittsburgh yarn in a red colour, Filtes King Velour yarn in a grey colour, patterns, & a Webkinz cat. The cat was really cute & since DD#2 loves cats, I gave mine to her. She did not attend the event.

I made a Tudora from the purple Filtes King Velour my DD#1 received in her goodie bag. It turned out really nice. I was able to get away with only one skein of yarn as I only knitted 3 inches instead of 3.75 inches the pattern calls for. I made this for DD#1 & she is not a big person. It worked out perfect & looks really great on her. It will also look great with her black leather coat.

Dancing with Sir Frogsalot!

DH bought me the book 'Son of Stitch n Bitch' for Christmas. While perusing the book he decided that he *needed* the Celtic Beanie for shoveling the driveway. No problem, it's a hat. On looking at the pattern closely I found out it is done in Double Knitting. I have never done double knitting. OK I can master a new skill & claim the points in Knitwars as well as casting on a new project. Bonus!!
I cast on, mastered the Double Knitting or so I thought! Knitted along quite happily when disaster struck on Row 9. Row 9 was the sticking point. I knit, I tink, I knit, I tink, I drop stitches, I pick them up, I knit, I tink. Frustrated I finally dance with Sir Frogsalot!! much to DH's dismay. I claimed the points for dancing. I cast on again & this time Knittin Mojo is with me or whatever it is. I am well past Row 9 & doing really well thank you!

This year I am going to be organized. I have joined the blog Year Long Gift-A-Long. There is a group on Ravelry as well. I am still participating in Stashalong for 2008. If I break this list into manageable chunks I should be able to do it!

Coke Bottle Pillow (or what we do for our Kids!! - Part 3)

Here we go again & it almost always involves DD#1's friend CL!!

DD#1's friend CL calls her at the beginning of December and asks her what she had for his birthday. She had not thought about it. He says "I would like another knitted pillow, this time with a naked girl on it". DD#1 said "In your dreams Bud!!"

I was going through Debbie Stoller's 'Stitch n Bitch' book & found the Mudflap girl. I asked her if she would like me to knit a pillow with the Mudflap girl on it. I got a resounding NO!! She had seen my early Christmas gift from DH, Debbie Stoller's 'Son of Stitch n Bitch'. She had seen the Hangover Helpers. Mum can you modify the Beer Bottle to make a Coke Bottle. I am sure CL has shares in Coke. He has a bar fridge in his room for his coke stash!!

CL is coming over this afternoon to get his prezzie!!! He has no idea what it is, all he knows is, it is knitted!!

I may have the dreaded 'Sock Bug' instead of 'Second Sock Syndrome'. I wonder if I will wake up & realize it was all a dream.

I have cast on another pair of socks, this time in Opal yarn colourway 108 & I am really enjoying them. I have actually finished the first sock & have already cast on the second one. I am motoring only on this one as well. Interesting since I usually do not like knitting anything twice, do not like mittens etc.

Refashioned Canvas Bag

I bought this canvas bag at a garage sale for 50c. DD claimed it and uses it to tote her stuff to school. It had a logo on it that she did not like, the local shopping mall.

We found a "Dr Who" patch the DH did not get sewn onto his jean jacket. DD snafued it & now it is on her canvas bag. Looks great as well!!

Jayne (Cobb) Hat

Both DD's are fans of Josh Whedon's 'Firefly' TV series & the movie 'Serenity'. DD#2 wanted a Jayne (Cobb) Hat!!

I knitted this Jayne Hat while watching the episode "Message" in which Jayne receives the hat from his mom & the DVD disc 4 easter egg, in which Adam Baldwin wears the hat while singing “The Hero of Canton”. It was quick & easy to knit & I used 'Red Heart Comfort' yarn.

I have finished the first sock of DH's for Christmas. I have been motoring along quite well. I am nicely surprised as I was in the Frog Pond last week with these socks.
I started them & found that they were too saggy so frogged them & started again with another pattern. Much better with a K3, P1 rib.

Look what I made for DD#1.

I really had fun making them.

The pattern for Roxy is here. Zoe has the black face & is the opposite stripes to Roxy. They only took a couple of hours to make.

I used Bernat Super Value White & Black along with Dollarama Fun Fur, held together as one strand. (I had to use my September Free Day for Stashalong for the Bernat Super Value White as well as the Dollarama Fun Fur, but the Bernat Super Value Black I did find in my stash.)

I love the way they turned out. Stiff for the puppet body but with fur like a tiger. DD absolutely loves them. She cannot wait to take them to school for the Puppetry Workshop.

Lincoln County Fair 2007

I entered into the Homecrafts & Garden Produce categories of the Lincoln County Fair & came away with 1 - 1st place, 2- 2nd places, 2 - 3rd places & 2 Fourth places. I am thrilled!! especially for my first time exhibiting in any fair.

Stashalong has a September Challenge. This one is to finish something already on the needles. I am not motivated to finish these Funky Punky Armwarmers. They are so boring!!!

I have already made 2 pairs, one for DD#1 & the other pair for her friend. Now I have to make another pair for DD#2. She asked for them--what can I say!!

This should motivate me -- then onto Christmas gifts.

Move Over Mobile Monster . . . Here Comes Jack!

As in the post Mobile Monster I made DD#1 a Pig Mobile Monster for her cell phone. I actually made two as the first one, I did not like the result. I added Bernat 'Souffle' yarn & the results are much better.

DD was thrilled. WAS as in past tense!! What happened?? Jack entered the picture.

DD's friend BW went to Toronto for a week. She found a 'Nightmare Before Christmas' cell phone holder in the shape of Jack's coffin. DD is a HUGE & I mean HUGE 'Nightmare Before Christmas' fan. Mobile Monster had to move over to Jack's coffin.

Socks for Christmas

This is the sock yarn that I bought when I was in Muskoka in the middle of July. (Bought with my July free day for Stashalong.) It was bought from Sheepstrings in Huntsville. WOW!! I loved that store. I could have spent MORE money and time there but maybe it was good that we were pressed for time. I looked around Sheepstrings & when I wanted to purchase the yarn I had DH go into another store to get something else, my excuse this would save time. My DD says "You are good!!" The yarn is for DH for a pair of socks for Christmas, blue is his favourite colour. I have 4 months to make 2 (two) socks. I am known for SSS!!! We will see how this goes!!

Bandana Quilt

Another catergory at the Junior Fair of the Lincoln County Fair is Sewing & a sub-catergory is a Quilt. DD#2 entered a quilt last year at the fair and was thrilled with the results. She actually got first place so would like to see if she can repeat the winning streak!!! This year she decided to make a quilt out of bandana's. It is 4 bandana's x 4 bandana's. Wow!!! does this make the quilt rather large, approximately 80 inches x 80 inches.

I made a Pig Mobile Monster with the 'Be Mine' yarn & did not like the results. I found the Bernat 'Souffle' in my stash & decided to knit them together. Much better results!!

I mostly lose mine as I can usually find something in my stash as a substitute.) I did go stash-diving but was not sure that I would find these colours in my stash. -- Not my usual knitting colours, & not the typical colours of a dragon.)

DH has a co-worker CP, she loves dragons.

The Irish Cable Bag is finished.

It is different from the pattern because I could not find the pattern. I had photocopied the chart of the pattern so I could write on the chart. You cannot write in books!! Also the pattern is from a book that I got from the library. I cannot remember the name of the book, also I cannot be bothered to go and try and find it again, so I since I was exactly half done I did the back of the bag in stocking stitch. Yes I believe it is cheating but I wanted it finished!!

DD#2 claimed it & really liked the back plain, so that is a bonus.

Refashioning Week

Last week was a refashioning week. Both DD's have nightshirts that they do not wear. They love the material but do not like nightshirts, so I did some refashioning. I changed them into PJ Pants.

Both DD's are thrilled with their new PJ Pants.

With the nightshirt below, there was definitely not enough material to make PJ Pants so I made a pillowcase for DD#2 as this nightshirt was hers. She is thrilled.

Robert Munsch & Sewing

DD#1 & I went to see "Robert Munsch" live this morning. The storytelling was absolutely wonderful. I love Robert Munsch. Did manage to get a couple of books autographed as well after the show.

DD#2 & DH went to see him this afternoon. You get the seats you can. The theatre was full. DD got to participate in the show. She was thrilled. DD managed to get her photo taken with Robert Munsch. We forgot to take the camera this morning.

This afternoon when DD#2 & DH were out seeing Robert Munsch. DD#1 wanted to do some sewing. We got some sewing panels from a garage sale yesterday. DD started with a quilt made out of bandana's. It is 4x4 bandana's square. Actually makes the quilt quite large. (Photo of the top of quilt to follow)

This is what I made this afternoon from one of the panels.

DD actually started to make this, but it was rather difficult as she is only a beginner sewer. She did the stuffing of the doll. She is thrilled with it.

At the garage sale she also got panels for making an Americana Doll with clothing & holding a mini quilt, a Noah's Ark with Noah & some animals & clothes for an 18 inch doll. She also got a Winnie the Pooh T-Shirt, Fabric transfers, & I added a sewing pattern.
Her total purchases came to $4

Modified Damien Hat

This is the finished modified Damien Hat from the book 'Hip Knit Hats: 40 Fabulous Designs' by Cathy Carron.

The yarn is Bernat Softee Chunky "Too Purple" The colour is actually purple, it just looks blue in the photo.

Multidirectional Baby Blanket/Lapghan Finished

The Multidirectional Baby Blanket that is to be a Lapghan is finished. I love the way the colours are. I am really pleased with the effect, like a small area of a chess/checker board.

Thanks for the help from the Multidirectional Yahoo group. I was not sure how the colours would be when I thought I would run out of the red yarn. I did crochet an edge around the complete blanket with the red yarn. To me it looks great!!

Multidirectional Knitting

This is Lanarte Starlight yarn
30% wool, 66% acrylic, & 4% polyester

This yarn was destined to become a Multidirectional Blanket. I found it in my stash.

I belong to the yahoo group called Multidirectional & the pattern I used is called Multidirectional Baby Blanket. It is in the files section of the website & you will need the book Modular Knits by Iris Schreier for some of the pattern instructions. I had to put out a plea for help to the group because I could not visualise how this blanket was constructed. Seeing how it is progressing, I love the way it is knit & the construction.

I was actually going to make the whole blanket in the red colour but I dont' think I will have enough yarn. After stash diving I found the grey colour yarn.

This is a scarf I made for Christmas 2007.

The yarn is Fancy Fur, colour 'Bold Black'. I got it from the Michael's Easter 2 Day sale for $1.49 per skein. I also got the colour 'Jungle Print' Could not pass up that price especially when the regular price is $7.99 April's Free Day for Stashalong has now been used!!
